Established in 1982 as an academic unit, its startup can be traced back to the startup of the university hospital. Till 2005 the unit has been providing courses for medicine and other health students and provides eye care hospital services. It is during 2006 that the current department of ophthalmology started training in ophthalmic officer, cataract surgeons and optometry. In 2010, we started training ophthalmology residents. At present, the department offers services with 15 academic and 32 hospital staffs.

   As a tertiary eye care center, our department is engaged in the three major activities

  1. Eye care service

The eye care services in the department are delivered by sub specialists, general ophthalmologists, ophthalmology residents, optometrists and ophthalmic officers. We deliver the services to the community at our base hospital and outreach sites. The services includes

For our service delivery and training the department, through appropriate channel, has been working with different partners and donors. Lists of partners who work with us include

One of the most celebrated partnerships exists with ORBIS international. Under the bilateral agreement signed in 2004 between Gondar University and ORBIS international the department has achieved many breakthroughs that includes; capacity building; equipping the unit with essential materials and supplies; assisting in outreach ophthalmic activities; establishing spectacle workshop and training different level eye care health professionals.

The other enduring partner of the department is Light for the World, an international NGO with similar objective of ORBIS international. Light for the World international on the other hand contributed to the development of the department by constructing an independent eye hospital with a capacity of 30 beds.

   Himalayan Cataract project also support us with equipping the department with essential materials and supplies, improving the quality of residency training through sending international guest staffs and sponsoring residents to sit for International Council of Ophthalmology exams. 

Soliel D’ Afrique and Himalayan Cataract project generously funded a number of outreach services of the department.

  1. Training

At present the department is engaged in the training of residents in ophthalmology. Residents are trained to manage a wide range of ophthalmic presentations both acute and chronic, on our inpatient ward and in many outpatient clinics. Currently there are 26 ophthalmology residents on training. To date, we graduated 32 ophthalmologists. 

   We also deliver ophthalmology courses to optometry (MSc and BSc), ophthalmic nurse, medical and health officer students.

  1. Research

The department is actively engaged in different problem oriented researches. There are multiple researches published on reputable journals by our department members that can be accessed through the University research repository or search engines including PubMed.
